One of the myths when it comes to laundry is how often you need to wash your clothes. It’s actually not as often as you think. One good indicator of the need for a good wash is the sniff test. If your clothes smell like sweat or mildew, its time for laundry. Also, if you spill something like a drink or food, it needs to go in the laundry bin. For items that you don’t wear as heavily, you actually don’t need to wash them every week. This includes suits, jeans, sweaters, or shirts you wear overtop of undershirts. You can usually wear them 2 or 3 times before you need to wash them. Items that your wear for layering need washing even less. Coats and jackets fit into this category. If you are careful, you may only need to wash these twice per season.

Towels And Sheets

You should sort your bedsheets and towels separately from your regular laundry. Towels especially can be hard on the fabric of your other items. Washing them with your regular laundry can make your clothes wear out faster. Also, sheets can leave fuzz balls all over your laundry, Your best bet is to do a load of laundry with just towels and sheets. This will keep your towels and sheets feeling fluffier and softer for longer.


One of the common laundry myths is that as long as you use cold water, you can wash lights and darks together. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Even with cold water, some of the dye from the dark clothing will reach your light clothing. You won’t notice it the first few items of washing, but over time you will. Your white’s will absorb the dye and appear dingy. Also, your darks will start to fade from this dye loss. The best rule to follow is to always wash them separately.

Baking Soda

Many of your already know the baking soda can be used for a lot of your cleaning needs. But did you also know it can be helpful when it comes to your laundry? Baking soda is great at eliminating odors. When you are washing your gym clothes, add a teaspoon of baking soda to your detergent. This will help eliminate some of the odor. Baking soda also can boost the color of your clothes. It keeps your whites whiter and your brights brighter. Start by adding a half cup of baking soda to your regular detergent. You should notice the difference in a few items of washing.
